Responsive Web Designing and Its Involvement in Shaping the Future of Online Communication

Web designing plays a pivotal role in the online communication. Today, we depend on the online platform to meet all our communications. Irrespective of age people are using various devices like Smartphone, laptops, workstations, ultrabook, netbook and PC to check out the latest websites launched on the internet.

The professional designers are creating a variety of sites. Starting from an edgy corporate site, to an attractive gaming site is developed by designing professionals. There are sites and games which often do not appear visually attractive on desktop screens, but the same site appears stunning when watched on laptops.

Since most people use laptops, the designers have begun focusing on designing websites which will look charming on laptop screens.

Designing Attractive Sites for Various Devices

The designing community therefore concentrates on creating sites for various screen sizes. Initially they used to apply tools for sites to be opened on desktops. But, today’s designers specially concentrate on creating pages for different devices and for various screen sizes, like for Smartphone, tablet or laptop screen.

It all began with the launch of iPod device which allows you to check out a set of web pages that are not available on your general computer. Besides iPod other devices like laptop also offer visually attractive images. Thus, a web designer now creates a same page for six to seven separate devices. In short, he develops different version for different devices.

Responsive Web Designing Techniques

We are here to discuss about the special approach needed to handle this problem of developing multiple versions of the same design. The new technique will help the designer to create a page for both the traditional and the future devices. The new technique of managed by Responsive web designing.

In the initial stage of designing, the designing was more or less done in a fixed manner.

For example, when the site was opened on a Blackberry phone, the web page failed to rearrange the data as per the size of the screen. They used to display the content and images in a wrapped version. Sometimes even an important data is lost due to adjusting pages.

But under Responsive web designing technique this particular problem is solved by creating dynamic pages which can adjust according to the size and display quality of the screen. There is new software which helps in such designing activity.

The newly designed sites will appear equally attractive on any device from desktop PCs to laptop or ultra-book. The pages are designed in a different manner. Now there are different elements that help the page to retain its original resolution and quality with change of screen size. The site is more flexible and dynamic than the traditional pages.

Today there are various tools and special techniques applied by the professional web designers to create “flexible images” or use “responsive type settings” to design the sites in a special way. The software which helps in designing such responsive sites is available on the internet. But, the change will actually happen when the traditional web designers learn and accept the use and application of the new responsive technology.

  1. Thanks for the post Susan, nice work.

A follow up post would be great with some specific methods/frameworks of implementing a responsive design. When designing my sites I use the grid 960 templates and implement them with the skeleton framework I’ve modded into a generic wordpress theme. I’m not sure if this is an optimum way of doing things, but its what works best for me.

I’d love to hear how others go about implementing their responsive designs.

  2. Good post to create the importance of responsive design, one can make use of twitter bootstrap to create responsive themes.

  3. Given that RWD will continue to be the trend among web designers. Of course, this will shape the very foundations of online communication.

We had a guest lecture at our university who said that over 2 years 60 percent of the people will make use of internet with a mobile device.

    Great article!!
